Stanbridge College Occupational Therapy Student Receives Mike Mikhail Memorial Scholarship By CAPPS
Stanbridge College Master of Science in Occupational Therapy student, Uchenna Ebiringah, was recently presented the Mike Mikhail Memorial Scholarship designated by the California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS). Mr. Ebiringah was chosen in recognition of his dedication toward his education in Occupational Therapy.
During his time as an Occupational Therapy (OT) graduate student at Stanbridge College, Mr. Ebiringah has served as a peer tutor to other Stanbridge College students who are struggling with their classes. He additionally volunteered in Stanbridge College’s mentorship program with Life College, where he helped intellectually challenged young adults. During his time with the Life College students, Mr. Ebiringah worked alongside his fellow OT students to design and implement an occupational curriculum teaching life skills classes—such as nutritional cooking, pressing their clothes, and navigating public transportation. This weekly series of instructional classes helped enable the Life College students to live independently and join a mainstream work environment.
“Uchenna has really set himself apart from other students,” stated the Stanbridge College Occupational Therapy Program Director, Dr. Janis Davis. “His future in Occupational Therapy is unlimited. He had the knowledge and perseverance, and he can go in any direction he wants.”
“I am incredibly grateful and excited to receive the Mike Mikhail Memorial Scholarship this year,” said Mr. Ebiringah. “I am so excited to continue my dream of Occupational Therapy.”
The Mike Mikhail Memorial Scholarship, named after celebrated educator Mohsen Aziz Mikhail, is an educational scholarship awarded to outstanding students who are recent immigrants to the United States or are first-generation Americans. Mr. Mikhail (affectionately referred to as “Mike”) himself immigrated to the U.S. from Cairo, Egypt, in 1966. Since then until his passing in 2010, Mr. Mikhail served as a Controller at both public and private educational institutions, enabling many students to achieve their academic goals.
The story of Mr. Mikhail’s arrival and hard-won success as an immigrant mirrors Mr. Ebiringah’s own incredible journey to further his career aspirations as an Occupational Therapist. Having moved from Nigeria with his family to the U.S., Mr. Ebiringah watched his parents strive to provide him and his siblings with a better future. As a result, he came to truly appreciate the importance of education. The Stanbridge College OT department has seen further success through their graduate students’ reach into the community with two other OT students being named to the California Campus Compact’s Community Engagement Student Fellowship (CESF). Ms. Lauren Schneider and Ms. Jennifer Chin used their position as student fellows as an opportunity to help strengthen Stanbridge College’s partnership with Life College, and had the chance to work alongside distinguished professionals both in the field of Occupational Therapy.
