Occupational Therapy Tips on Parenting for Busy Parents
As families become busy with school, work, extracurricular activities, social gatherings and other commitments, parents may feel as though they are not paying enough attention to their children throughout the day. According to the American Association of Occupational Therapy, occupational therapists are trained in child development including physical, mental, emotional and behavioral management. To help out busy parents, the AOTA has several tips for engaging with children. A few of them include:
- Be realistic with your time. Children need independence. Encourage quiet play with stimulating toys and books in their room or crib.
- Learn the milestones for your child’s development and set realistic expectations.
- Be prepared for setbacks. As life changes, children need time for adjustment.
- Reward positive behaviors and break negative behaviors early.
- Help your children explore the environment and provide them with toys to help develop skills.
- Involve you children in family tasks including sweeping, dusting, and setting the table.
